CULLINGWORTH residents plagued by churchgoers, pub customers and village hall revellers are to be given parking permits.

Eight residents of Church Street will be the only ones allowed to park their cars outside their row of houses.

Many of the seven spaces are snapped up regularly by members of nearby St John’s Church, hair salon customers and people attending functions at Cullingworth Village Hall.

The residents also face pressure from customers of the nearby George Hotel and nearby shops.

Bradford Council will issue the permits as soon as money is available in the highways budget to pay for new parking restrictions.

The council’s Shipley Area Committee this month agreed to the permits after receiving a petition from residents of Church Street and neighbouring Francis Square.

Members heard that in recent years parking become increasingly difficult for residents, due to parking associated with a nearby pub, church, village Hall and shop.

Residents feared problems would worsen once Cullingworth Village Hall relocated to a new site elsewhere in the village, leaving the present site to be used for housing.

The committee heard that numbers 4 to 14 Church Street had no off-street parking, and 1 Francis Square had just one space.

The village hall car park, known as Francis Square, currently has 17 parking bays, with no restrictions on their use.

Council officers surveyed the Church Street parking spaces on seven occasions, and at least one space was available at all times. Out of seven spaces, up to four at a time were occupied by non-residents.

The permit parking scheme will not be introduced until Shipley Area Committee allocates money for it. The scheme will be considered for funding every year amongst dozens of potential road schemes in Shipley, Bingley and surrounding villages.
