MORE than 1,000 former and current subpostmasters, including 26 in West Yorkshire, have so far registered an interest in joining a landmark legal action against the Post Office.

Campaigners claim that over the last 10 years, hundreds of subpostmasters experienced issues with the Post Office’s Horizon system, which led to many being accused of theft, receiving fines and even jail terms.

More than a tenth of those who have expressed an interest in joining the legal battle are from Yorkshire, they say.

Alan Bates, of the Justice for Subpostmasters Alliance, said the matter had been “a national disgrace”.

He said: “We’re heartened by the number of subpostmasters now coming forward from Yorkshire and right across the UK.”

A spokesman for Post Office Ltd said: “The Post Office welcomes the Group Litigation Order as offering the best opportunity for the matters in dispute to be heard and resolved.

"We welcome the progress that has been made but will not otherwise comment on litigation whilst it is ongoing.

“We continue to have confidence in the Horizon system which has around 78,000 users across 11,600 branches nationwide to process six million transactions a day.”
