POLICE have issued a warning to Keighley motorists following a spate of thefts from unlocked vehicles.

At least 21 incidents were reported over the Easter weekend alone – in Keighley, Shipley and Manningham.

Satellite navigation systems, laptops, mobile phones, wallets and shopping bags were among items stolen.

Now police are urging people to make sure their vehicles are locked when they are left unattended.

Detective Sergeant Graham Dyson, of Bradford District Police, said: "If you are using remote central locking, then it is advised that you check the door handle to make sure it is secure.

"It is also a good idea to remove any valuables if you can or at least keep them out of sight, as they will appeal particularly to an opportunist thief who may just be walking past."

West Yorkshire Police recently launched a campaign to prevent burglary during the spring and summer months, when burglars often take advantage of people leaving doors and windows open during warmer weather.

The campaign urges people to take simple steps such as keeping keys hidden, locking garden tools away, using burglar alarms and locking doors and windows.

Chris Joyce, a crime prevention officer at West Yorkshire Police, said: "The onset of lighter nights and warmer weather means more people will be spending time outside in their gardens, but there are simple things you can do to help protect your home.

"It can take just 60 seconds for burglars to get into your home and steal your belongings, but you can help prevent this by making it more difficult for them by removing opportunities they may look for.

"Crime prevention doesn't need to cost huge sums of money. Simply locking your doors, shutting your windows and not leaving your valuables on display can make a great difference. These easy steps can significantly reduce your chances of being a victim of burglary."
