A KEIGHLEY town councillor who left the UK Independence Party just under a year ago has now joined the Conservative Party.

Councillor Ian Dermondy, who represents Guardhouse ward, confirmed the news today, (April 19) saying he wanted to put people's speculation to rest.

He stressed that he intended to continue sitting as an independent town councillor in Keighley, but added he would ultimately like to be selected to contest a district council ward for the Conservatives.

"I'd like it to be Keighley West ward if possible, but then that would be down to the party," he said.

"I quit UKIP a year ago as a lot of their beliefs and values just didn't sit comfortably with me.

"I joined the Conservatives last month as I think their values are very close to mine.

"At a district level it is easier to achieve things as part of larger organisation. But I don't think it's really relevant to parish and town councils – it's not what they were set up for.

"It won't change how I work as a councillor. I always listen to what residents have to say and I still want what is best for the town."
