THE TIRELESS work of Keighley community volunteer Alex Brown has been highlighted by the district’s biggest social landlord.

Incommunities today issued a tribute to Braithwaite man Mr Brown after he died peacefully on Thursday last week.

The organisation, which manages former council houses across Bradford district, described Mr Brown as a passionate residents’ champion and active supporter of Incommunities.

Mr Brown last year became chairman of the housing group’s newly-formed Community Trust Panel, which scrutinises the work of Incommunities, its customer services and policies.

This followed many years as chairman of Incommunities’ Aire-Wharfe Local Management Trust and as a member of several customer panels at the housing group.

Mr Brown was also chairman of the Bradford District Tenant and Residents Federation and Bracken Bank and District Community Association.

A great deal of his time was given as a long-serving volunteer at the Sue Belcher Centre at Bracken Bank and the Keith Thompson Centre, Braithwaite.

A spokesman said: “In recognition of his services in helping others, Alex was presented with a Special Lifetime Achievement award in 2016 by Incommunities’ Group Chief Executive, Geraldine Howley.

“Fittingly, this accolade was made at the Gerry Pickersgill Awards which recognise outstanding tenant involvement, an event Alex was proud to support every year.

“In 2015 he was also among ten active tenants honoured by the housing group for their ‘involved’ work helping other residents.

“At the time Alex said: ‘I really value making a positive difference to other peoples’ lives. Giving some time is a great way of having a voice.’”

Mr Brown had lived in the Keighley area most of his life and was a much-loved father to Katie and Yvonne and grandfather to Xander, Thomas, Lucas, Leon and Minnie.

In tribute, his daughter Katie this week said: “It is such a great loss to the family. My father had been ill for a number of years but continued to work tirelessly helping people – whether tenants or residents – and representing their interests.

“I am determined to continue his important legacy including through my involvement with Incommunities.”

Katie is a member of the group’s Community Trust Panel.

Geraldine Howley said colleagues and friends at Incommunities were very saddened to hear that Mr Brown had passed away.

She added: “Our condolences and sympathies go to his family at this time. Despite being ill Alex refused to let it get in the way of his many roles at Incommunities and within the community.

“His positivity and dedication were exemplary and enabled him to achieve great things for tenants and residents. He was also a strong advocate for social housing and supporter of our work to improve local homes and people’s lives.”

The funeral service will take place on April 26 at 1.20pm at Nab Wood Crematorium in Shipley.
