DRY and largely sunny weather helped give a big boost to the 2017 St George's Day Celebrations in Keighley.

The events, which included a street market and a mini funfair in the town centre were arranged by Keighley Town Council and Bradford Council.

The funfair was staged in Church Green last Saturday (April 22) by the town council.

It featured children's games, a bouncy castle and bouncy slide, face painting and food. There was also an ice cream van, live music and a charity gifts and book stall which was arranged by local charity shop Fresh Waters.

Councillor Luke Maunsell, chairman of the town council's events and leisure committee, said: "It was great, we had a steady stream of people throughout the day and estimated that about 600 to 700 people attended.

"The face painting and bouncy castle were particularly popular, and we were also able to display our horse drawn Black Maria.

"We couldn't do so this year, but for next year we'd like to get a licence so we can offer people rides in it.

"Our next event will be Yorkshire Day in August and we're in the planning stages for that right now."

Fresh Waters shop floor manager Luke Ferrey said the charity gift stand, which was raising money to buy water filters for people in developing countries, had been extremely successful.

"It was brilliant, and we had a really good response from the public, as we always do," he added. "The stall raised nearly £200.

"We'll also be having a May Day sale on Monday outside our shop in Bridge Street from 10am to 4pm."

Among the visitors enjoying the Church Green funfair during the morning last Saturday were Exley Head couple Jill and Martyn Milner with their 10-year-old daughter Poppy and seven-year-old son Lucas.

Mrs Milner, 38, said: "We thought we'd come along just for half an hour, but I think the kids want to stay longer!

"It's a really nice use of this area, and I'd like to see this kind of event more often in the town.

"I know the centre isn't always shown in as good a light as it could be, as there are a few empty shops. But you need fun events like this to help encourage people to spend money locally."

The 13 market stalls were laid on by Bradford Council in nearby Low Street over last Thursday, Friday and Saturday. (April 20 to 22)

Stalls offered a range of range of gifts, food, refreshments and craft items to shoppers.
