THE FRIENDS of Silsden Town Hall are forging ahead with plans to increase usage of the building.

The volunteer-run group this week unveiled a range of future activities to turn the building into a ‘jewel in the crown’ for Bradford Council.

Friends chairman Ray Colling said the group was continuing its campaign to save the historic venue despite setbacks caused by “austerity-inspired” cuts.

He said the programme of activities in the Kirkgate building Was being stepped up, and several applications had been made for additional funding.

But he appealed for the ongoing support of the public as Friends members continued negotiations with the council over the future of the hall.

He said: “We need the community fully behind us as we continue to strike a positive note. The battle for the town hall is far from over.”

Mr Collins said the Friends did not want to follow in the footsteps of other groups in the district by taking over the building under the Community Asset Transfer scheme.

He said that instead, the Friends’ plan of action was to boost the hall’s income and usage to turn it into an enhanced feature of Bradford’s public venue portfolio.

He added: “A funding sub-group is already at work, seeking new finance for kitchen equipment, sound facilities and the purchase of a mobile stage and screen.

“This should make the hall much more attractive to new user groups and exciting new events and possibilities.

“In addition, the lively Events Committee is planning a range of new projects, including a 1940s themed dance, concerts, dinners and junior discos, alongside old favourites such as the annual Family Day and senior citizen teas.”

The Friends are also working closely with the newly formed support group for Silsden Community Library, which like the existing council-run library will be at the town hall.
