THE widow of the Keighley Cougars rugby player Danny Jones was guest speaker at this year's Beckfoot Oakbank prize evening.

Lizzie Jones fielded questions from students about her career, family and the Danny Jones Defibrillator Fund.

Her husband died in 2015 after collapsing during a match, and was later found to have a hereditary heart condition.

Following his death, Mrs Jones started a campaign to provide lifesaving defibrillators for rugby league clubs throughout the country.

Commenting after the prize evening, a spokesman for Beckfoot Oakbank said: "125 students attended and received prizes for various subjects and achievements.

"Once all the prizes had been given out our head teacher David Maxwell presented Mrs Jones with a cheque for over £1,000 – the money had been raised at a fundraising quiz night in March.

"Students and their families were treated to some live performances by the Beckfoot Oakbank Samba band and the Close-harmony vocal group.

“The event was a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.

"We're so proud of our students and their achievements and they deserved to be celebrated.

"We'd also like to thank Mrs Jones for finding time in her busy schedule to come and talk to our students.

"This has been the last prize evening in the old school building, as next year we'll be in our new premises."
