A VILLAGE fete is to be held inside the Airedale Shopping Centre this month.

Dementia Friendly Keighley will hold the event on May 20 to mark the end of Dementia Awareness Week.

The fete, which includes a fitness display, live music and a singalong, is the second such event organised by the group.

The shopping centre will be filled with information stands from national and local charities that provide and support for people with dementia and their carers and families.

The Alzheimer’s Society, Carers Resource, Rotary Keighley and The Memory Tree will all be represented.

There will be live music from acts including the Otley-based Woolpackers Band.

Health and fitness expert Janice Bairstow will lead a demonstration by a seated exercise class group for people with dementia.

Maggie Marsden, from Dementia Friendly Keighley, said the group would demonstrate exercises used to stimulate activity and improve brain function.

She said: “There will also be a singalong with members of Rotary and the Singing Teapot.

“This proved very popular when the group sang in the Airedale Centre at Christmas with lots of passers-by joining in. We hope for the same again on May 20.”

Maggie said the fete would particularly focus on engaging with young people from around Keighley, with a face painter and other children’s activities.

She added: “There will be an opportunity for children to attend a specially-designed Dementia Friends session, which will help them to understand more about dementia and how they can help people living with the disease.

“This session is very interactive and caters for children aged between six and ten. The session will take place in the early afternoon.”

People wishing to take their children to the session are advised to check the schedule on the day the exact time.

Dementia Friendly Keighley will also have a home-made cake stall, a tombola, and a stall selling craft materials and locally-made craft products.

The Keighley in Bloom group will be available to talk about “all things to do with the garden” as well as selling plans for people’s plots, patches or windowboxes.

The fete will run from 10.30am to 3pm.
