A HAMMER thrower from Cononley has helped launch an annual search for Yorkshire 'young achievers'.

Jessica Mayho was at an event to get the awards scheme, organised by the Yorkshire Young Achievers Foundation, underway.

She is in training to reach next year's Commonwealth Games and has received grant aid from the foundation.

Jessica was joined at the launch by Leeds-based actress Lucy Sherman, who was named Youngster of the Year in last year's awards programme.

The accolades, sponsored by McCormicks Solicitors, recognise the achievements of under-35s across the county in eight categories.

This year marks the scheme's 25th anniversary.

Chairman Peter McCormick said: "This is a special year for us and it would be wonderful to see even more nominations from right across Yorkshire.

"We believe the county produces some great talent and that our young people have the grit and determination to succeed whatever the challenges they face – and we want to hear about them!"

The deadline is September 15.
