LISA Winteridge led from the front as she claimed double gold for Keighley-based Strike Taekwondo at the Spring England Open Championships.

In a successful first day, with Poomsae (technical) the focus, she came first in the black belt senior category, ahead of Brian Kerr (Ireland) and Tetsuhiro Shinkai (Japan), who claimed silver and bronze respectively.

Winteridge then took gold in the 'Champion of Champions' competition, which featured the first-place winners from across all the black belt categories.

It was a good learning experience for the Strike team, some of whom were competing for the first time, while some also enjoyed great success.

Jonathan Kitcheman took gold in the senior green belt category and bronze in the Champion of Champions, Grace Bowes claimed bronze in the children's green belt section, and Amy Winteridge and Petra Muff took silvers in their junior and senior categories.

Other medal winners – Poomsae Individual: Devon Chan (Junior) – Gold, Catherine Wossick (Senior) – Bronze; Poomsae Pairs: Devon Chan and Amy Winteridge – Silver; Poomsae Triples: Mark Ainley, Catherine Wossick and Lisa Winteridge – Bronze.

In the sparring competition on day two, brothers Cody and Jake Calvert were back in action after a two-year break. Both put on a fine display, with Jake taking gold in the Child B Class (white to red tag) and Cody claiming silver in the Junior B Class after a close fight which went down to the final seconds.

The Pee Wee and Child categories were strictly no head shots. A couple of Strike members were well on their way to a medal but were disqualified due to accidental kicks to the head.

Medal winners: Jake Calvert (Child) Gold, Cody Calvert (Junior) Silver, Lewis Horne (Pee Wee A Class) Silver, Emma Hammond (Child) Silver, Jake Hammond (Child) Silver, Layla Smith (Pee Wee) Silver, Ehsan Siddique (Child) Bronze, Riley Turner (Child) Bronze.

Winteridge said: "From 32 teams, we placed tenth. I was really proud of our team, their attitude, hard work and preparation ahead of the competition and how they competed on the day.

"Our team will compete again next month in Fleetwood and will be back in Manchester for the Autumn England Open this September."
