OAKWORTH people flocked to help during the latest three-day clean-up operation at a village beauty spot.

Existing members of the ‘Cure Hill Mob’ were joined by dozens of helpers of all ages to clear vegetation, improve access and repair walls.

Cure Hill, between Oakworth and Newsholme, has for many years been used by local people for walks, games and picnics but in recent years has fallen into disrepair.

Community development worker Pip Gibson said the Mob was going from strength to strength with a steady growth of enthusiastic volunteers.

She said: “Over the past couple of weeks we were joined by local families including young children and grandparents.45 people over three days (and four dogs) helped to move stone across the site in preparation for the next phase of dry stone walling.

“They dug the weeds out of the roadside frontage and planted it with flowers, rebuilt smaller patches of dry stone walls, made mini beast dens out of gathered twigs and created a compost heap with the old vegetation.

“Donations of stone and plants were received from local people, which are being used to pad out the walls and help create a colourful floral display.

“Following the hard graft, the group were treat to a welcome hot lunch thanks to local lasses, Nadine Peck and Michelle Corcoran.”

Food ingredients were donated by Oakworth Co-op with support from the Cabbage Club, a community group with an allotment in Braithwaite.

Oakworth Scouts spent two days on the site to carry out digging and planting, and also to prepare a patch of land halfway up the steps where benches will eventually be installed.

Pip added: "Funding has been received from Bradford Council to pay for a dry stone waller to repair the larger expanse of wall on the public footpath.”

Mariyam Siddique, manager of Oakworth Co-op, said: “In Oakworth the community really is focused on the welfare of whole village. Be it litter-picking, the fun fair, charity, planting or the renovation of Cure Hill, it gives us great pride and we do not shy away in playing our part.

Nadine Peck, one of the volunteers, said: “It was lovely to have young families coming along and getting involved in improving our green spaces. A super effort by everyone involved, especially the children, who were all great."
