RUGBY-mad youngsters in Keighley and Silsden are having a try at raising money for children in need.

Children attending local Rugbytots physical activity sessions will take part in the Try-athlon in aid of the Wooden Spoon charity.

Wooden Spoon is described as the children’s charity of rugby and raises money for projects for disadvantaged and disabled children.

Scott Millar is running the event during his normal classes in Silsden, Keighley, Carleton, Skipton, Clitheroe and Giggleswick for the week from June 24.

Mr Millar runs Rugbytots Craven and Pendle, a rugby play programme for children aged two to seven years.

As well as regular classes in each of the towns and villages, he also provides programmes in schools and nurseries, catering for around 250 children each week.

Mr Millar said: “Our Rugbytots will get sponsorship to score as many tries, kick as many goals and catch as many passes as possible in five-minute sets.

“To kick off, everyone who takes part will receive a certificate, and everyone who raises over £25 wins a mini Rugbytots ball.”

The top fundraiser will receive one year of free Rugbytots classes and tickets to an international rugby match, the second prize winner will get one term of free classes and a Legoland family pass, and the third prize winner will receive merchandise.

The best class will receive a visit from the Rugbytots mascot and a size two ball for each member.

Mr Millar added: “The Try-athlon is part of our ongoing efforts to raise money for Wooden Spoon. Since 1983, the charity has distributed in excess of £24 million, helping over one million young people.

“To raise even more funds and celebrate Rugbytots UK’s 10th anniversary we’re also organising a bike ride from Lands End to London in August.”
