MULHOLAND will travel across from York to play the latest Blues and Roots night in Riddlesden.

The Willow Tree pub on Ilkley Road will host the evening of music on Saturday, again organised by Keighley singer-songwriter Ben Blue Waters.

Ben will kick the night off at 8pm and play the opening set of foot-stomping slide guitar blues songs.

Headliners are York-based duo, Mulholand, who comprise husband-and-wife team Stan Smith on lead vocals and acoustic guitar and Ann Dunford Smith on harmony vocals and fiddle.

Ben said: “Mulholland bring their own take on acoustic rootsy Americana with their close harmonies and well-crafted, bittersweet songs.

“Their influences reach back to the heyday of singer-songwriters in the 1960s and 1970s, and since forming as a duo in 2015, they have firmly established themselves as one of the top acts of the York music scene.

“They have been busy performing regularly with gigs all over the UK and, amongst others, they have supported Cale Tyson [USA], Charlie Parr [USA] and The Hot Seats [USA].”

Mulholland’s first album, North Country, was released at Easter last year to critical acclaim, as was the single and video Black Feathers, which was filmed in Belfast and on the Antrim coast.

Also playing the Riddlesden gig is Manchester bluesman Vincent O’Brien.

Ben said: “Vincent first picked up a guitar when he was 13, inspired by the Beatles and Stones.

“But by the time he was 16, he had all but abandoned Top 40 pop music in favour of the blues and American roots music he became exposed to from listening to artists like The Cream, Ry Cooder and Captain Beefheart.”

Vincent is currently working on recording two albums of original songs and an EP that will include some covers of classic blues and Americana.
