CLASSICAL Indian dance will be presented on June 24 at the Kala Sangam Arts Centre in Bradford.

Siddhendra Kuchipudi Art Academy, based in New Jersey, USA, will premiere their performance of Krishna Parijatham.

The dance ballet, on the theme that love is universal, will be performed by Swathi Atluri and her students.

They will show how the desire to possess a special Parijatha flower leads to arguments in an attempt to win the grace and favour of Lord Krishna by Queen Rukmini and Queen Satyabhama

A spokesman said: “A multi-layered performance, Kuchipudi combines drama, dance, sign language, mime and music to create a vibrant theatrical experience for the audience.

“Sri Krishna Parijatham narrates the story of Lord Krishna’s greatness, beauty, and romance as he fights for the hearts of Rukmini Devi and Satyabhama.

“Filled with emotive content, evocative expression, and scintillating drama, the ballet is a true testament to the ancient, mythological contours of the Kuchipudi history.”

Under the artistic direction of founder Guru Swathi, Siddhendra Kuchipudi Art Academy provides Kuchipudi training throughout New York, Connecticut and New Jersey.

She has imparted her creative knowledge to over 1,500 students in a career that has spanned 35 years.

Heavily influenced by the Natya Shastra theory of the classical theatrical arts, Kuchipudi makes full use of the abhinaya, four ways of conveying meaning and emotions to the audience.

Angika represents the movement of the body, vachika is the use of speech which is expressed through song and miming words in Kuchipudi.
