MEMBERS of a Keighley theatre group waved off a fellow actor as he prepared to cycle to Germany.

Big Soup performer Paul Rae set off this week as part of a party of disabled cyclists riding from Bradford to its twin town of Hamm.

Paul, who uses a wheelchair, is riding with his grandfather Anthony on a specially-constructed tandem bike with three wheels.

Paul has been with Big Soup Theatre Group, based in Russell Street, for about three years and played roles such as Big Chief Knitting Wool in Peter Pan.

The actors last year raised money to support 28-year-old Bingley man Paul’s ride, but he had to delay the expedition until this year when his bike was finished.

The ride is organised by Bradford Disability Sport and Leisure which has sent able-bodied cyclists to Hamm for several years to raise cash for local athletes with learning disabilities.

This is the first year that disabled cyclists have been able to take part.

Keighley people involved in the right include rider Tom Walsh and mental Ian Dobson.

Bradford’s Disability Sport and Leisure (BDSL) spokesman Barry Thorne said: “I am extremely proud of the riders, some of them with multiple disabilities, and what they have overcome.”

Members of the team still need support for future cycling activities. Anyone who can help should contact Barry on bsr1@btconnect.com or call him on 07423 431629.
