Andrew Davey was out for a walk near the culvert at the bottom of Howden Road when he saw police with shields, helmets, masks and guns.

He said: "They asked me if I'd seen a man in a suit running that way. Then they told me to leave the area. They looked as if they were ready for a riot, they had proper, big guns. There was a helicopter out as well. Police are all over Silsden in Aldi car park, in the mill, near the industrial estate and down by the canal. Something big is going off."

Another man told the T&A: "I heard the helicopter hovering above the house. The nextdoor neighbour dragged the wife out because there was armed police. They meant business. They had automatic rifles and side arms. It was quite scary. It's not what you expect in Silsden."

Meanwhile West Yorkshire Police have tweeted: "Police are aware of speculation on social media linking the discovery of a man's body in the canal at Apperley Bridge to a report of a man seen with a firearm in Silsden.

"These incidents are not being treated as linked and while the death of the man is still being investigated it is not believed to be suspicious."
