THE Skipton Inter-District veterans' team put up a brave show against a much-vaunted Bradford team, especially in the home leg at Cross Hills, where they gained a 18-10 victory in fine style with only two losers.

The Settle representatives put in a good effort to win their games, while Cliff Taylor also gave a fine performance.

Sadly, overall it was not to be as the side were well beaten at West Bradford with a weakened squad, despite two winners in Alistair Keighley and Kevin Burnett, and the final scoreline of 31-25 did not reflect the effort.

The next game is on Friday, June 30 against inconsistent Leeds.

The Settle representatives carried on their good work the next day as they took their team to the last eight of the Yorkshire ABA’s mixed team event for the Radley Trophy, defeating a poor Heckmondwike side.

Victory was achieved by over 80 points at Crowghyll Park, where Graham Ralph excelled with a 21-3.

The next match is on Saturday, July 15.

Yorkshire veterans reached the final of the Ladies' County Team Knockout held recently at Todmorden Park, where they qualified by defeating Cheshire, Burton and Staffordshire A and B before losing comfortably to old rivals Lancashire.

Locals Kath Whitaker and Viv Abell played their part in all of the games.

Things got better for Viv on Sunday when she was part of the Yorkshire Ladies' team that made further progress in the County title race at the expense of Mid-Cheshire, with comfortable wins in both legs at Marsh United and Norley.

She won 21-17, while Sharon Gadd, of Keighley BC, triumphed 21-3.

The decider against Warwick/Worcester is on Sunday, July 16.

No doubt Viv will be in action again on Sunday when the Skipton Ladies' Inter-District team compete in the annual one-day event run by the Yorkshire ABA, this year in the Aire-Wharfe area.

The team travel to Burley-in-Wharfedale to play the West Riding and Cas.

If they are successful, Skipton will play the semis at Rawdon Park and the final at Rufford Park. In recent years, the team have won this event and lost twice in the final to hot favourites Huddersfield.

The Keighley and Valley Merits events are scheduled to be played at Keighley BC on Sunday – a change from the original venue.

Details of draws and starting times from Mick Demain.

The quarter-finals of the Skipton knockout events for the Clarkson and Supplementary Cups are a week today.

In the Supplementary event, Keighley B meet Whinfield A at Settle, Steeton B face Sutton B in a derby at Colne Cricket, PF B square up against Rolls Royce at Gargrave, and Settle A play Lund B at Craven.

The semi-finals of both events are on Thursday, July 20.

The John Rycroft Trophy, run by the Aire-Wharfe Association, was completed on a lightning fast green at Broughton Road and was won by the talented Luke Teale of Guiseley – his second consecutive victory in the league’s events.

Several locals came unstuck in the conditions, apart from Joanne Ellis of the home club, who reached the semis, despite catering for all of the competitors!
