VISITORS to Denholme Children’s Gala this weekend will be able to try fairground games created by young people from the village.

The youngsters designed and built three traditional wooden games as part of the lottery-funded Love Denholme project.

The project was spearheaded by Denholme Youth Cafe with help from Denholme Primary School pupils, the village crafters' group, several adults and Paul Bose from Youth Street.

Youth Cafe treasurer Peter Foster said: “The aim of the project, which was developed by the young people, is to celebrate what local people like about living in Denholme and support one of the main community activities.

“The games are now finished, tried and tested and ready for their first outing at the gala.

“From the reaction at school and in the park when they were being tested we know they will get lots of attention. They will also be available to hire for similar events in the district.”

The photographic competition is open to people of any age who live in Denholme.

Mr Foster said: “We want them to say what they love about living in Denholme and send in pictures, new or old, from in and around the village.”

Winning pictures will be displayed and judged at a special event in the Mechanics Institute at the end of September, and the winning photos will become a calendar to be sold to raise money for the Youth Cafe.

Email enters to denholmeyouthcafe@mail.com or take them to the café in Foster Park on any Saturday morning. The closing date is September 9.

Denholme Gala runs on Saturday, July 1, beginning at 1pm with a parade from Ogden Lane told the Gala field in Foster Park.

Attractions include Halifax Boys Brigade Band, floats, fancy dress, vintage vehicles, high-performance cars, a dog show, baking competition, magician, crazy golf and dance displays.
