A KEIGHLEY councillor has warned people to stay alert eight days on from a fatal attack on Muslim worshippers near a north London mosque.

Zafar Ali, of Central Ward, said people who do see suspicious or potentially threatening activity should not hesitate to pass their concerns onto the police.

One man has been charged with terrorism-related murder and attempted murder following the attack near the Finsbury Park mosque, which left 51-year-old Makram Ali dead and 10 other people injured.

A group of Muslims were targeted when a van was deliberately rammed into them in the street.

Cllr Ali said he had spoken to police in Keighley since the incident and had been assured that patrols would be stepped up in the town to enhance people's safety.

"Attacking a place of worship, whatever religion it represents, is deplorable and uncivilised," he said.

"We must stand together against these thugs and terrorists. They are trying to divide us and we must not let them do that."
