AN attraction and memorial in the heart of Keighley was visited by a pair of Yorkshire in Bloom judges.

Phil Young and Beatrice Myers came to assess Town Hall Square yesterday. (July 19)

The square is managed by Keighley Town Council and the flowerbeds and lawns are tended by gardeners Steve and Joe Thorpe.

For 2017 it has been entered into the Yorkshire in Bloom "Open Spaces" category.

A spokesman for the council explained: "We entered the square in category nine of Yorkshire in Bloom this year for the first time, though the square has always been judged as part of the overall town entry in previous years.

"The judges seemed impressed with the work that the town council has done in the square, the display of flowers and the general all round cared for appearance of the square.

"A big 'thank you' to everyone who turned out to meet the judges. We look forward to finding out our result in September."

Councillor John Kirby, chairman of the town council's allotments and landscapes committee, said he had been very encouraged by the judge's reaction during their visit.

"The flowerbeds looked absolutely superb and they were astonished at how much had been done to improve the area," he added.

"We won't find out how we've done till the awards ceremony in York on September 12.

"It's wonderful that so many people are now being able to enjoy the square and garden, but this has been thanks to a community effort.

"If we're successful in Yorkshire in Bloom it won't be just the town council that has won but the people of Keighley, because this is their garden."

Cllr Kirby offered his thanks to Steve and Joe Thorpe, council allotments officer Lee Senior and town clerk Safia Kauser for the efforts they put in to ensuring Town Hall Square continues to look its best.
