A KEIGHLEY school welcomed 1,000 young people and their families through its doors for a fun day before the end of term.

The event was staged at University Academy Keighley. (UAK)

Hundreds of children enjoyed a range of activities including mehndi decorating, face painting and bouncy castles, while Disney characters were available for photos thanks to Pipeline Keighley.

Refreshments included an ice-cream van, popcorn, a candy floss machine and a pedal powered smoothie bar.

Stuart Smith, assistant principal for student aspirations, said: “We're thrilled to welcome so many families into UAK, we always say to parents that this is their school and believe the community is at the heart of what we do here.

"The fun day shows how important this type of event is for our local community and the parents we've spoken to are keen for us to have other events in future.”

Families were invited to explore the school's state-of-the-art facilities. Curriculum subjects showcased on the day included science, which gave young people a chance to experience hands-on activities such as a plasma globe.

British Army personnel were on hand, providing a giant inflatable Spitfire and enabling young people to talk about military careers while handling a selection of armed forces kit.

Families enjoyed a feast of traditional Asian food supplied by Northern Leaf Catering, of Dalton Lane.

The fun day raised £900 for Airedale Hospital and the Danny Jones Defibrillator Appeal.
