FROM playing in the under-seven boys' team at Silsden Juniors to representing Wales at under-19 level, Steeton-based Ceri Holland leaves for a new challenge this summer after accepting a football scholarship with the University of Kansas.

While studying for a degree, Holland will compete at the highest level of college soccer in the USA with the Jayhawks women's team after both her academic and sporting performances impressed Stateside.

It represents the next step for the 19-year-old former South Craven School pupil, whose steady progress in the English game has taken her from grassroots through the FA Women's Premier League and up to the top of the tree - playing for Super League champions Manchester City's development side.

And her ambition to continue improving is mirrored in her choice of university.

"I am delighted to have been given the chance to study for a degree alongside playing college soccer for an elite NCAA Division One team," she said.

"Coupled with this, the Jayhawks play in the Big 12 conference which is regarded as one of a handful of the top Conferences in NCAA Division One women’s soccer."

She continued: "Ultimately, I chose to go to the University of Kansas as I felt their calibre of players and coaches alike will ensure that my footballing skills are challenged constantly.

"Their sporting facilities are second to none and I was keen to test myself at the highest level."

Kansas was one of many options Holland had to choose from after a successful application process, carried out through PASS4Soccer.

Every year, the organisation helps around 100 students earn soccer scholarships in the USA and Holland was quick to thank them for her opportunity.

"I was very fortunate to have many top quality offers and Daniel at PASS4Soccer was excellent in advising and guiding me as to what he thought would be right for me throughout my time with them," she said.

And with the college soccer season beginning as soon as next month, Holland can't wait to get started with her new challenge.

"The USA is well known as one of the top countries in the world for women's soccer and investment in women's soccer in the USA University system is unbelievable, with superb opportunities," she said.

"I am looking forward very much to getting started in August and seeing America.

"Flying to away games will certainly be a different experience!"
