OXENHOPE children discovered that running and sponsorship added up to £1,000 for charity.

Pupils of Oxenhope Church of England Primary School took part in a sponsored run to raise money for children’s charity the NSPCC.

But to make finishing the one-mile course harder the youngsters had to recite their times tables as they ran.

Deputy head Alice Jones said the whole school participated, from 5 to 11-year-olds, and the final total was expected to be around £1,000.

She said: “At Oxenhope, keeping our children safe and raising awareness of how to stay safe, is one of our main duties as a school.

“We feel it is all our responsibilities to help keep children safe in education and we are extremely proud of what our children have managed to achieve through this event.

“The children were quoted saying ‘It was really fun, we want to do it again, it is important to raise money to help keep other children safe’.”
