A KEIGHLEY mental health organisation that mainly works with women of South Asian origin was visited by the town's MP.

John Grogan spoke to workers and service users at Roshni Ghar.

A spokesman for this group said: "John was able to find out more about what we do to support women who may have been diagnosed with mental illness.

"Volunteers and service users asked John a number of questions on changes to welfare benefits, and talked to him about lack of investment and job opportunities in Keighley."

Mr Grogan said: "Roshni Ghar has a national reputation for its work in promoting the mental health of Asian women in Keighley.

"As well as advice and support they provide opportunities to attend English classes and help women gain confidence.

"I reckon if they weren't there it would cost the local health service thousands of pounds, as more women would instead go straight to doctors' surgeries and to Airedale Hospital."

Among Roshni Ghar's recent activities have been two sessions working with National Citizen Service (NCS) participants.

The NCS groups met some of the women Roshni Ghar assists, and learned about mental illness and the impact it has on people.

Roshni Ghar has also arranged for women who attend its base in Scott Street to go on an outing to Malham.

The spokesman added: "They found the setting very therapeutic and beneficial to their emotional and mental wellbeing."

Another group of women are due to be taken by Roshni Ghar to Morecambe tomorrow. (August 9)

The organisation has thanked everyone who provides funding support, including Keighley Town Council.
