THE LORD Mayor of Bradford has sent his best wishes to Pakistanis and Indians living in Keighley as they celebrated the 70th anniversaries of their home countries’ independence.

Cllr Abid Hussain, who lives in Keighley, is taking part in commemoration events this week across the district.

He today (Monday) visited the Pakistani consulate in Bradford for the traditional annual flag-raising then attended an anniversary open day at the Markazi Jamia mosque in Keighley.

Cllr Hussain was born in the Mirpur region of Pakistan – the place of origin for many Asian people living in Keighley – and moved to Keighley at the age of 12.

He this week said: “I would give many congratulations to the communities living in Keighley on the anniversaries of independence.”

Pakistan Independence Day is observed on August 14 every year, commemorating the day when Pakistan was declared a sovereign nation following the end of the British Raj in 1947.

Independence Day is observed in India on August 15 every year, commemorating the day when UK Parliament transferred legislative sovereignty to the Indian Constituent Assembly.
