A FUNDRAISING campaign reeled in £1,286 to help send terminally-ill Keighley pensioner Ron Scholefield on a final fishing trip.

Kind-hearted Keighley people were hooked after Keighley shopkeeper Azeem “Jimmy” Hussain issued an appeal to help angling fanatic Ron.

Keighley News readers joined the line of supporters during the appeal’s final couple of days after we published the story of Ron’s desire to return to Ireland for a special fishing challenge.

Ron, who has esophageal cancer, wants to fish on the Grand Canal in County Kildare where he last took part in competitions 25 years ago.

Ron is a regular customer of Jimmy’s videogame and phone shops in Hanover Street, Game On and Total Electronics Exchange (TEX), and told Jimmy of his bucket-list dream.

Jimmy immediately issued and appeal to friends, family and customers. Ron, a retired special-needs driver, said he was “absolutely gobsmacked” by local people’s generosity.
