Guiseley 0 Hartlepool United 1

SKY Sports presenter Jeff Stelling will have been punching the air with delight in his own inimitable style as his beloved Hartlepool picked up their first win since relegation from the Football League.

Hartlepool dropped into the Vananrama National League for the first time at the end of last term and have taken their time settling in. But today's victory, 1-0 at the expense of Guiseley, lifted them above the Lions, albeit on goal difference, to fourth-bottom after seven games.

Guiseley were unfortunate not to take the lead early on when Frank Mulhearn's header to Alex Purver's fourth-minute cross hit the underside of the bar and came back out.

It was a double blow for the Lions as Callum McFadzean was injured and needed treatment before being replaced by Lee Molyneux.

The visitors had an effort in the 40th minute, with Devonte Rodney sending in a low drive from distance, It went wide but gave the travelling fans in the 1,723 strong crowd something to sing about.

Rodney had another attempt early in the second half but it was blocked by home keeper Joe Green.

However, Jonathan Franks netted a fierce strike soon after and that proved to be the only goal as Pools keeper Scott Loach pulled off an excellent double save to deny Lions skipper Danny Lowe and Kayode Odejayi from the rebound.

Guiseley boss Adam Lockwood was obviously downbeat and said: "It's always disappointing when you get beaten.

"We had chances early on and if you take the lead it's a different story – but you can go on and on about that. It's about being ruthless and it boils down to us not being.

"There were a few occasions when we might have been unfortunate not to score but for me you've still got to put them in.

"You have to capitalise, whether it's Kay (Odejayi) or anyone else. Kay has come off the bench and unsettled them a bit but you have to be there week in week out and we haven't got enough who are at the minute."
