AN appeal for support has been broadcast to help renovate dilapidated in facilities in Oakworth's Holden Park.

Efforts are under way to improve the park's bowling clubhouse and toilets.

Community development worker Pip Gibson explained: "We need volunteers and donations of time or resources.

"I'm currently working with Roger Laird, Andrew Wiseman and Jackie McGinnis at Friends of Holden Park to try and renovate the bowling clubhouse and toilets.

"The rooms are in a dilapidated state and desperately need some care and attention.

"Therefore, I'm asking local people, community groups, tradesmen and businesses if they can lend a hand in creating facilities that offer an inviting space.

"Our 'wishlist' includes plastering the ceiling and walls, painting the walls, a new carpet, new windows and doors, new kitchen units, new tables, chairs and soft furnishings."

As reported in the Keighley News early last year, the users of the building had warned then that the property was urgently in need of refurbishment.

They said the two-storey premises' ground floor ceiling had collapsed due to heavy rain.

The building dates back to the time of the original 19th century house built by St Isaac Holden, which was destroyed in a fire.

Members of the bowling club used to be on the first floor of the property, but then moved downstairs into what used to be the park keeper's office.

Ms Gibson said: "At the moment the building and toilets really are in a bad condition. You wouldn't want to go in there even if you needed to.

"If we can get it re-painted and re-plastered it would make it so much more welcoming for community groups, or for when there are public events in the park.

"We don't have funding for this at the moment so it would be preferable if people can donate their time and skills.

"It might take time but I know we can do it. Past experience tells me that once we put a call out to the community and look to rely on Keighley's goodwill, people do step up.

"Once we get a few skilled people prepared to be involved I'll arrange a meeting so they can come and view the building, make suggestions on what work is required and what they can do to support us."
