SOUTH Craven MP Julian Smith is encouraging more school trips to Parliament.

He said he was delighted to welcome visiting groups.

Figures show that in the last academic year, 251 students from 11 schools in his constituency have taken part in visits.

Also, 17 teachers have participated in training events.

Mr Smith said: "Parliament's education service does a fantastic job of helping students and teachers to get involved with politics and democracy.

"It arranges tours of the Palace of Westminster and puts on workshops and teacher training sessions and arranges learning competitions.

"It is always great to meet school groups – when Parliamentary business allows – and I would encourage any teachers, students or parents to see if they can arrange a tour for their school or class.

"Many schools in our area qualify for a travel subsidy because we are so far from Parliament."
