A BANNED driver who led police on a high-speed chase through East Morton has been jailed for 16 months.

Wayne Cooper, 31, of Hunslet, Leeds, sped away from officers in his Volvo on Otley Road, Eldwick, at around 4am on July 31.

During the three-and-a-half-mile pursuit, Cooper, whom the court heard suffered from schizophrenia, drove at 55mph through the 20mph village of East Morton and took blind bends on the wrong side of the road before his car was stopped by a police stinger.

Asked for his views on his driving, he told police: “Well, your driver had trouble keeping up with me” on a “rollercoaster road”.

Cooper, who was banned from driving for 27 months at the time of the offence, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving while disqualified.

He will be banned for two years on his release from prison.
