KEIGHLEY'S Royal British Legion is on the hunt for new members as it gears-up for one of its busiest times of the year.

With the annual Poppy Appeal on the horizon, the branch is seeking to bolster its ranks.

And Legion bosses are particularly keen to attract young people.

The charity's Keighley membership has dwindled over the years, and currently stands at just over 60.

Branch secretary, Jackie McGinnis, said: "When I started with the Legion six or seven years ago, we had well over 100 members in Keighley.

"As people have got older, that figure has fallen.

"Unfortunately the Royal British Legion is seen by many as 'an old men's' organisation, but that stereotype is just not true.

"We have a number of female members in the branch, and you do not have to be former or current service personnel to join – I'm not!

"Also, we would like to see younger people in particular come forward. There is even a free, youth membership for under-18s."

The branch is staging its annual general meeting at the New Variety Club, in Russell Street, Keighley, from 2pm to 4pm on Wednesday, October 11, and prospective members are invited to attend.

Light refreshments will be served and a bar will be available.

This year's Poppy Appeal is to be launched at the end of next month, and the Legion will again have a shop unit in the town centre.

The current Keighley appeal has so far raised over £38,000.

A short service and dedication will take place at the garden of remembrance in Town Hall Square on Thursday, November 9, at 11am.

There will also be an Armistice Day ceremony at 11am, and the annual Remembrance Sunday commemorations – including a parade and service – on November 12.

"Anyone – schools, groups and individuals – is welcome to come along to any of these events," said Mrs McGinnis.

"We'd love to see as many people as possible."
