A KEIGHLEY group which ensures sick and elderly pilgrims travelling to the holy destination of Lourdes are cared for during their journey wants to recruit more volunteers.

The Massabielle group is preparing for the 2018 pilgrimage to Lourdes, in southern France, where its volunteers will once again accompany physically frail people from the Keighley area.

Sean Gilligan, the Massabielle spokesman, who is a former Holy Family Catholic School deputy head and veteran of many Lourdes pilgrimages, said he was keen to link up with former pupils who went to Lourdes when they were at Holy Family, and other ex-students who may have missed out on the trip when they were at school.

"We're trying to encourage younger people to get involved," he said. "And we also hope to interest professionals who are doctors and carers, so are therefore qualified to look after people.

"We always have people who are ill or elderly and want to go to Lourdes, but we need to ensure we keep up our numbers so we have enough volunteers to care for them on their journey."

People prepared to join Massabielle can call Mr Gilligan on 07733 295248 or Michael Devlin on 07946 440617 for more details.
