JOHN Grogan MP pretends to be for the people and for this town, yet he has not represented the many in Yorkshire and this town who voted for Brexit by voting against the Repeal Bill.

I have travelled around all the northern parts of this country on business and seen the lack of industry, the deprivation and dilapidation and the loss of fishing industries, the EU having paid huge grants to hundreds of industries to uproot and move their premises to the EU. One example of this is Cadbury having moved to Poland.

John Grogan has now made his mark as an ineffectual, career politician.

This country has a great future out of the reins of the bullying EU, and with our history, we have opportunities to trade globally.

We are bringing sovereignty back to this wonderful country and everyone who voted for Brexit knew and fully understood this meant coming out of the Common Market and the Customs Union.

I campaigned across Yorkshire for Brexit and it was an overwhelming vote for Brexit. John Grogan should be working for the people and respecting the people’s mandate democratically voted for by the people.

HILARY NEWMAN Keighley

* Mr Grogan responds: “The Labour Party opposition and I voted against the Repeal Bill in Parliament.

“This bill is not about the principle of leaving the European Union (which was voted on in Parliament before the General Election) but how we do it. As the bill stands, it would allow the Government, without full recourse to Parliament, to change existing environmental protection laws and regulations affecting rights of workers. This is not acceptable.

“In addition, many companies in Keighley that export abroad have been in contact urging me to vote in Parliament to maintain the fullest possible access to both the single market and the Customs Union. They tell me investment and jobs in our local area depend upon it.

“I think the Labour Party is right, therefore, to say we should remain in both the single market and the Customs Union for a transitional period, and perhaps beyond it. Norway, for example, is not a member of the EU and has control of its own agriculture, fishing, justice and regional policy. The country remains, however, a member of the single market.”
