A VISITOR from Japan came to Haworth to find out more about how the village promotes the cause of ethical trade all over the world.

Megumi Morita, who is from the coastal town of Zushi, Japan's third Fairtrade town, was treated to a tour of the village courtesy of members of the Haworth Fairtrade group.

Among the locations she visited were the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway station, the Bronte Parsonage Museum, West Lane Baptist Church and Sonia's Smile Fairtrade shop.

She was accompanied by Bruce Crowther, who is founder of the global Fairtrade Town initiative.

While in Haworth they were introduced to the village's extensive involvement in a range of regional Fairtrade events. Megumi in turn delivered a presentation about her own town's work to be awarded the coveted Fairtrade town status.

Commenting after her visit, Keighley Fairtrade group member and Bradford Council Fairtrade champion Cllr Adrian Farley said: ā€œI was delighted to attend and be part of this event.

"Iā€™m so pleased that Haworth Fairtrade was able to showcase what they have done over the last couple of years.

"Fairtrade is about trade and not aid.

"It's about empowering communities to enable them to fulfil their lives, improve standards of living and healthcare without being exploited.

"It was great to meet Meg, and hopefully she was able to bring back ideas to develop Fairtrade in Japan.ā€
