PARENTS across the Keighley district are being urged to ensure their children get a free flu jab.

Youngsters aged two and three and those in 'at risk' groups are eligible for the vaccination and should have received a letter from their GP.

District health chiefs say children in the at-risk categories – which include those with diabetes or heart, lung or kidney disease – are 11 times more likely than 'healthy' youngsters to experience complications if they get flu.

Last year, two in every five parents across the Bradford district took-up the free vaccination offer for their children.

Sarah Muckle, deputy director of public health for Bradford Council, hopes the take-up will be higher this year.

"Flu is not just a cold – it's very contagious and can be a really serious illness," she said.

"Having the vaccine doesn't just protect your child, it helps stop the flu spreading to other people who may be even more vulnerable than you.

"It's vital that everyone who receives a letter from their GP makes an appointment to have the quick and simple vaccination and not leave it to chance.

"The seasonal flu vaccine is safe and effective and I would encourage every parent to have their child protected."

Any parent of an eligible child who hasn't received a letter should contact their GP.
