PEOPLE of all ages across the Keighley district will stand shoulder-to-shoulder this weekend to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Spanning the generations, everyone from veterans to young children will join the nation in commemoration of those who have given their lives in conflict.

Groups, organisations and individuals will pay moving tribute not just to those who fell in the two world wars, but those who were victims of other 'battlegrounds' such as the Falklands and – more recently – Iraq and Afghanistan.

In Keighley on Thursday (November 9), a ceremony will take place at the garden of remembrance, Town Hall Square, at 11am.

A similar commemoration will be held in the square at the same time on Armistice Day.

And on Remembrance Sunday, services are being held at churches and war memorials district-wide.

There will be civic representation at more than 30 of the services.

The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Keighley councillor Abid Hussain, will be attending a ceremony at the cenotaph in Bradford city centre before taking the salute in City Park.

And in the afternoon, he will be at a commemoration in Baildon.

Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Doreen Lee, will attend the Keighley service in the morning and Ilkley in the afternoon.

This year's events take on added significance, as the nation marks the centenary of the Battle of Passchendaele and the 75th anniversary of the Battle of El Alamein, a decisive conflict of the Second World War.

Cllr Hussain said: "The annual services of remembrance in our district are important events to remember those who have lost their lives, been wounded, have suffered or are still suffering in any way due to past and present conflicts around the world.

"I hope people can take the time to attend a service."
