MORE action is being taken to stub out smoking during pregnancy.

Health workers and organisations from across the region have met to debate the issue.

Figures show that in Yorkshire and the Humber, around 9,000 women continue to smoke while pregnant.

"Smoking is the single modifiable behaviour in pregnancy that could change the outcome for mum and baby in relation to stillbirth," said Dr Sarah Winfield, clinical lead for the region's Maternity Clinical Network.

"Organisations are agreeing consistent practice to reduce current variations in services supporting women."

Also, free online training is being offered to frontline NHS staff to help them give advice to all patients who smoke.

The programme is provided by the National Centre for Smoking Cessation and Training.

Corinne Harvey, for Public Health England, said: "Smokers respond well to healthcare staff giving advice.

"A truly smokefree NHS is about healthcare staff leading by example and doing all they can to encourage patients, visitors and colleagues who smoke to stop."
