A "guardian angel" who went to the aid of a couple involved in a road accident in Keighley town centre has been praised for his public spirited actions.

Skipton-based husband and wife Les and Maxine Allen were driving in North Street, near its junction with Albert Street, early on Tuesday morning (Nov 21) when the accident occurred.

They collided with a bollard at about 7am, leaving their car badly damaged.

Mrs Allen, 68, was the passenger in the car. She said she and her 81-year-old husband had been on their way to give their grandchildren a lift to school at the time of the crash, which left them shaken but unhurt.

She added that other motorists had stopped, but said the man who really distinguished himself had been at the bus stop outside Wetherspoon Livery Rooms pub.

"He was waiting for the bus to go to work," she said.

"He came over to make sure we were OK, phoned the police and helped us with some of the insurance details.

"It was raining and my husband is disabled and uses a wheelchair. So this man, who I only know was called Neil, helped my husband into Wetherspoons, got him a coffee and stayed with us till we could get a cab to go home.

"He must have been with us for about one and a half to two hours.

"He was a true diamond and a guardian angel. He was absolutely fantastic and you don't get many people like that. I can't thank him enough."

Mrs Allen said the man was in his late 20s to early 30s. She said she understood that he works in the Gargrave Road area of Skipton.
