MORE than £11,000 worth of proceeds from this year's Oxenhope Straw Race has been dished out to good causes.

Organisers of the popular annual event staged a presentation this week, where a total of £11,150 was handed out.

Donations went to Manorlands, Haworth Riding for the Disabled, Phab Club, Faith and Light, Relate’s Youth Counselling Service, Bradford Disability Sports and Leisure and Oxenhope Preschool.

Other beneficiaries included Oxenhope Youth Club and the Parkinson’s Disease Society. Cullingworth Scouts and the Keighley Scout Fellowship also received donations in recognition of their support on the day of the straw race earlier this summer.

Jane Barrett, one of the organisers of the straw race, said: "As part of the presentation evening we also gave certificates of thanks to those teams who raised £100 or over.

"The winners of the highest sponsorship accolade were long standing supporters of the straw race, local ladies Audrey Butler and Fran Cameron, who raised £421.

"Hot on their heels were Robert and Linda Mackley who raised £420.

"It was a great evening with all charities in attendance, each saying a few words of thanks and explaining how the donations are spent.

"We had a tombola which always proves very popular, this year raising £140.

"Oxenhope Straw Race couldn’t happen without the continued support of Wyedean Weaving, McDowell Transport, Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, The Waggon and Horses, Oxenhope Social Club, The Lamb, The Dog and Gun, Cullingworth Scouts and Keighley Scout Fellowship together with an army of marshals.

"We'd like to say a huge 'thank you' to everyone involved and to all the runners who once again looked amazing in their fancy dress.

"The committee are taking a few weeks to recover before plans for the 2018 event begin in earnest in February."
