COUNCILLORS in Oxenhope discussed how they might help celebrate the return of the Tour de Yorkshire to their village next year.

Organisers of the event have confirmed that it will pass through this village on May 6.

Speaking during the latest meeting of Oxenhope Parish Council last night, (Dec 13) Worth Valley Ward councillor Russell Brown said that acting in his non-councillor capacity he again intended to create some displays with school children which can be located along the route of the cycle race.

“I want to work with schools to get kids interested in using tools,” he explained.

“Hopefully we can put on a good show and I’d like to have some support from the parish council.”

Councillor Ken Eastwood, chairman of the parish council, said he and his colleagues would be interested in taking a look at what Cllr Brown is proposing to do, once more information is available.

Cllr Eastwood added: “This overlaps with what we’ve been talking about with our Neighbourhood Development Plan where we’re looking at how to promote Oxenhope.”

Cllr Peter McManus suggested putting on some form of community event in Oxenhope’s Rose Garden, pointing out that this is on the exact route of the 2018 race.

The parish council is in the process of taking over the management of the Rose Garden from Bradford Council.

Cllr David Ashcroft recommended inviting Cllr Brown to address January’s parish council meeting in more detail about his plans to work with school pupils to celebrate the Tour de Yorkshire.
