A ONE off experience is being offered on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway (K&WVR) as part of the attraction's 50th anniversary.

The railway will welcome an "Icon of Steam", a locomotive called Royal Scot, between June 25 and June 27 next year.

K&WVR's anniversary celebrations are taking place from June 24 until July 1 2018.

Royal Scot, which was built in 1927, was the first in a new breed of steam locomotives, made by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) for their fastest passenger services from London to Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow.

Selected to represent the LMS, the locomotive was made famous for a tour around North America in 1933.

Having served the passengers of the West Coast it was rebuilt by British Railways in 1950 with modern modifications. Eventually the engine was retired to display in Skegness in 1962.

A K&WVR spokesman said: "After a long and major overhaul, Royal Scot triumphantly returned to steam in September 2015.

"She made her successful main line debut on December 22 and 23 that year with test runs from Crewe to Carnforth and return.

"She hauled her first main line passenger train for over 50 years on February 6 2016 from Crewe to Holyhead.

"Royal Scot will be at the K&WVR for three days only.

"People can be part of this amazing experience and travel behind Royal Scot. We're offering one return trip on Royal Scot at a cost of £20 per person or £45 per person in the Pullman Carriage.

"The journey will begin with a K&WVR locomotive which will take Royal Scot to Keighley. Then Royal Scot will haul the passenger train between Keighley and Oxenhope or Haworth.

"After their journey passengers will be able to enjoy the rest of the railway, as their ticket will include unlimited travel throughout the day and entry to the Rail Story Museums at Ingrow."
