BLACK ice caused mayhem on the district’s roads.

A series of crashes occurred and some schools were closed.

Anger was voiced at Bradford Council, which was accused of not responding to residents’ requests for gritting.

But the council said it was “not feasible” to grit all roads or to respond to every request.

James Bennett, who works as a head of year at Beckfoot Oakbank School in Keighley, had to cancel his lessons yesterday morning.

A recovery truck slid into his car outside his home in Baildon.

Mr Bennett, 23, said: “I was in my bedroom when I heard a loud bang just after 6am.

“I looked out and our neighbour was outside slipping and sliding everywhere.

“His recovery truck had slid sideways into my car and pushed it back about five or six spaces. If it hadn’t gone into my car it would have gone straight up our drive and possibly into the house.”

He added: “It wasn’t the neighbour’s fault. He’s a decent chap – it was a complete accident because of the ice.”

Across the district, there were eight full school closures and nine partial closures.

Those affected included Cullingworth Primary.
