YOUTH workers have been active for the past few months on streets in the Keighley Big Local regeneration area.

Bradford Council’s ‘detached’ youth workers have been developing relationships with groups of young people from Hainworth Wood, Stockbridge and Parkwood.

Discussions about the youngsters’ interests and the types of activities they would like to see, have led to weekly sessions in each of the areas.

Youth workers have provided one-to-one support on a range of issues including school and college, emotional well-being, and awareness of Child Sexual Exploitation.

The teenagers are now starting to take an active role in planning their own programmes and activities, with members of one open access youth club working towards the Lord Mayor’s Award.

As part of a cultural awareness activity they also took part in an ‘opening a fast’ to celebrate Ramadan, and others hosted a meal in Parkwood for people from across Keighley as part of last year’s Great Get Together

One of the priorities of the lottery-funded Keighley Big Local is to develop play activities for young people.
