YOUNG runners from Oxenhope Primary School can now visibly and proudly represent their village whenever they train or compete.

Their school has spent some of the money it receives from the PE and Sport Premium funding scheme to buy 50 children's running vests, prominently featuring the name of Oxenhope.

The school has enjoyed significant recent success in cross country.

Its year four boys and girls teams and three of its year six individual runners have made it through to the Bradford District cross country qualifying races, giving them a chance of progressing to represent West Yorkshire.

Sam Fawcett, the school's sports champion, said the vests are designed so the name Oxenhope will still be visible even when the children wear their individual runners' numbers.

"It will be lovely for the pupils to be able to show they are part of a team," she added. "The vests look really smart.

"The first time they will wear them to actually compete is on January 24, when they take part in Bradford District qualifying races at Cliffe Castle.

"As a school we're keen to improve the quality of sporting experiences for our children."

Oxenhope Primary has introduced hockey for its pupils and a sport called boccia, which is like a seated version of crown green bowls. Mrs Fawcett said she hopes to also introduce netball.

The new, red and white running vests were worn for the first time by members of Oxenhope Primary's own running club on January 9.

The vests were supplied by Ilkley-based company Dobson and Robinson Intersport.
