A NEW Keighley Town Council mayoral cadet scheme could be implemented if councillors give the go-ahead at their latest full meeting on Thursday evening. (Jan 25)

Members of the town council will be asked to vote on whether to formally establish the initiative, which was first unveiled last year.

The idea involves providing Keighley's mayors with a ceremonial guard from the ranks of a town cadet unit.

It was originally put forward during a presentation by the Keighley Sea and Royal Marine Cadets.

Town councillors agreed in principle to the concept at a meeting in July 2017, where a background report suggested one or more "exceptional" cadets would be selected for the role.

They would serve a 12-month term as mayoral cadets, attending ten or so functions per year, as well as the annual meeting or council mayor making.

Since the plan was agreed in principle, members of the town council's policies and governance committee have been finalising the details of how the scheme will work.
