SPORTS clubs in Keighley that welcome disabled people are highlighted in a new guide.

The Inclusive Sports Directory showcases 50 sport and leisure activities available to children or adults with physical or learning disabilities.

Bradford Disability Sport and Leisure (BDSL) has published the directory detailing its own sessions as well as activities provided by specialist and mainstream sports clubs across the district.

The free guide also includes information about sport centres, swimming pools and other facilities in Keighley, Bradford and surrounding neighbourhoods.

The two dozen different sports include boxing, bowls, archery, cricket, golf, football, dancing, cheerleading, rugby, cycling, powerlifting, rowing, rugby and tenpin bowling.

BDSL sports development manager Dean Carroll said: “We have worked really hard over the past six months to bring together all the opportunities out there for disabled people to get out, be active and have fun.

“It’s great to showcase the vast and varied inclusive activity opportunities that are available right across the Bradford district – there really is something for everyone!”

BDSL is a charity that that provides inclusive sporting, leisure and physical activity opportunities for disabled people, ranging from grassroots clubs in Keighley to sending local athletes to national and international tournaments.

The charity runs several weekly athletics activities for children and young adults at University Academy Keighley, as well as a pool and snooker club and long-established Wednesday Leisure Club.

Other Keighley activities in the directory include Keighley Cougars wheelchair rugby, the Family Fitness Night, Bradford Disability Football Club, Haworth Hawks Table Tennis and Keighley Table Tennis and Recreation Centre.

There is also Tai Chi in and Braithwaite, riding in Cross Roads and St Ives, and outdoor adventure at the Doe Park Water Activity Centre in Denholme.

Karla Burton, the BDSL inclusive sports officer, said the directory was made possible by investment from the Get Out Get Active fund.

She said: “We were able to engage with many inactive communities in the deprived areas of Bradford and Keighley which has provided more opportunities in the district.”

“We would like to thank Bradford Council for their support over many years which enables us to help co-ordinate the information about all our partners and local providers.”

Cllr Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Environment, Sport and Culture, said: “This directory outlines all the opportunities for people with disabilities to get involved in a wide array of activities and have fun.”
