SOUTH Craven people are being invited to take part in an initiative to choose the object which best represents civilisations in the district.

Curators and librarians in Craven have selected a total of seven contenders from their collections to do battle for the title.

The items are a Bronze Age jet earring, a Roman amethyst intaglio, medieval floor tiles from Bolton Abbey, a Ribblesdale peat spade, Timothy Crowther’s ‘spell book’, Richard Ryley’s diary and Dr Rowley’s research notes.

Now it will be up to the public to decide which is the most significant.

The venture – involving Craven Museum and Gallery, The Folly at Settle and Skipton Library – forms part of the BBC Civilisations Festival.

The objects are on display at the museum and the library throughout this month.

And the case in favour of each piece will be made at an event at Skipton Library on Tuesday, March 6, between 2pm and 4pm.

People will be able to vote on the day.

Tickets for the debate on ‘Craven’s Magnificent Seven’ cost £1, including refreshments.

County Councillor Greg White, executive member for libraries, said: “People should keep their eyes open for pop-up exhibitions showing pictures of Craven’s Magnificent Seven – and information about each item – at libraries across Craven.

“That way, even if they can’t make the grand debate, they can still vote for their favourite.”

Next week, information about each object will also be posted on the Skipton Town Hall Facebook page.

There will be a facility to vote via the page on March 5 and 6.

Once all the votes have been counted, the result will be announced through local and social media, Skipton Library, Craven Museum and Gallery and The Folly.
