A PRIMARY school girl in Glusburn has demonstrated her charitable instincts by raising money for a good cause from her unwanted toys.

Mia Clough, a year four pupil at Glusburn Community Primary School, generated enough money to be able to donate £144 to Martin House hospice, near Wetherby.

In a note to her school, Mia's parents Tracy and Stephen Clough explained: "Over the past year, Mia has been selling toys she no longer plays with.

"She said all the money she got from these sales, she wanted to give to charity.

"She did a bit of research and decided that she wanted to donate the money to Martin House Children's Hospice.

"So during half term, we drove to Martin House and Mia donated the £144.

"The ladies at the hospice reception were very grateful for Mia's donation and spent some time asking her about how she raised the money.

"As Mia's parents, we are extremely proud of her and her decision to do this."

Mia's school head teacher, Richard Hunt, said: "We've very focused on fundraising at our school for a variety of charities.

"But for Mia to do this independently without even any input from the school is marvellous. She's a very good, thoughtful citizen."
