UNHEALTHY snacks could be removed from vending machines in council-run sports and leisure centres.
The move follows new national guidance designed to cut down on childhood obesity.
Councillor Nicola Pollard had highlighted the calorie values of some of the snacks on offer, including “packets of crisps at around 190 calories, chocolate bars at around 200 calories and pastries at around 270”.
She asked at a Bradford Council meeting whether these would be removed in the light of new guidance from Public Health England that children should eat a maximum of two snacks per day, of 100 calories each.
In response, Councillor Sarah Ferriby, portfolio holder for sport, said that “the council is going to meet with the vending operator to discuss options for stocking other items which would comply with the new guidance”.
